A 15 amino acid sequence taken from a partial region of body protection compound, a protein identified in human gastric juice. It is one of the most frequently published research peptides of the last two decades and the single most requested compound in the wholesale trade.
Where it came from
Characterised from the 1990s onward largely by Predrag Sikiric and colleagues at the University of Zagreb, who published the majority of the animal work on it.
What the literature examines
- Tendon, ligament and muscle repair in rodent transection models
- Gastrointestinal mucosal integrity and NSAID induced lesions
- Angiogenesis, including VEGFR2 signalling and the nitric oxide pathway
- Vascular recruitment after occlusion in rat models
- Interaction with the dopaminergic and serotonergic systems in rodents
State of the evidence
The published body of work is almost entirely rodent. There is no completed, peer reviewed, placebo controlled human trial of injectable BPC-157 in the literature.
What a buyer should know
A large share of the positive literature originates from one research group, and independent replication outside it is thin. The FDA placed BPC-157 in Category 2 of its 503A bulk substances review in 2023, meaning it flagged significant safety risk for use in compounded preparations. It is also covered by the WADA prohibited list under S0.
Handling and stability
Supplied as a lyophilised powder. Widely described in the literature as unusually stable in gastric acid relative to comparable peptides, which is why oral routes appear in the animal work. Hold reconstituted material cold and protected from light.
