A 28 amino acid neuropeptide of the secretin glucagon family, widely distributed in the nervous system and gut. It is a potent vasodilator, a bronchodilator and an anti-inflammatory signal, and it sets the circadian rhythm in the suprachiasmatic nucleus.

Where it came from

Isolated from porcine intestine by Sami Said and Viktor Mutt in 1970.

Aviptadil, the synthetic form, has been through registered human trials. The COVID-19 trial results were contested and the FDA declined emergency authorisation.

What a buyer should know

Circulating half life is on the order of a minute or two, which is the central practical fact about VIP and the reason clinical work uses inhaled or infused routes. Systemic vasodilation is the dose limiting effect, not an incidental one.

Handling and stability

Notably unstable, both to enzymatic degradation and to surface adsorption. Among the more demanding peptides in this catalogue to handle well.
